I came to live with mum and dad when I was three, when I arrived on Aug 05 1999 I was very quiet and they actually thought I was mute.......that soon changed, once I had eaten the sofa cushions on my first night I think they wondered what they had let themselves in for!
There has been a lot of ups and downs in the time we have lived together......I'm not very good at being left on my own in the house......some of the things I have eaten whilst they have been out include a whole CD collection, numerous duvets, a carpet, the entire contents of the fridge, minus the whole raw Chicken.......I left that in the middle of the kitchen floor as a gift (I think they are still secretly impressed I managed to open the fridge with my paws & my nose!), the gold coins you get at Christmas (again they were impressed, as all the foil covers were left whole with no teeth marks.....I'm not going to tell them how I did that!), a box of Thorntons chocolates(on that occasion I got to follow it with a bowl of cornflakes by order of the vet....good day all round I think....although there never seems to be chocolate in the house anymore???!!!!), and various other items that weren't mine, like Dad's cap or mobile phone!
The good thing about living with Mum and Dad is they have never given up on me even though I like to eat things that i shouldn't, and after many years of trying different techniques of leaving me we finnally came up with the idea that I don't mind being left in the Garden.....I have my own kennel which is bigger than next doors shed and it's warm and cosy, they even heat it for me in the Winter and in the summer I get to sunbathe all day which I really like.
I also like picnics, it means we all get to sit on a rug and share food, not like when we are at home and I'm not allowed mum and dad's dinner....... I like picnics so much that once I went and got my own, I managed to escape out of the garden without mum and dad knowing, the first they knew about it was when I came trotting back in with cling film wrapped sandwiches in my mouth......well if the builder down the road is going to leave them on the wall what is a beagle supposed to do?
The other thing I really like to do is go on adventures.....mum and dad call it running off, but once I get on a scent I kind of forget they are there, I don't mean to disappear they just don't seem to stay with me??!!! So some of the time I have to stay on my lead....other times they let me run free!
Once I followed a scent and ended up at the local playgroup, the lady there rang the number on my collar and my Dad came to pick me up.....it seemed a fun place to be though!
Another time I went to visit my friend on the coast and I ended up at the top of a cliff when I should have been on the beach, my Dad had to climb all the way up to get me down, after that they said i must be related to a Mountain goat!
I'm thirteen next month, but still have the mental age of a puppy. i forget that I'm old and have arthritus, and some time go running after other dogs to play and my legs give way......but I don't let that stop me BEAGLING!
