Max's Poems
An introduction
I’d like to introduce myself, my name is simply Max
I’m a miniature schnauzer and I’ll tell you a few facts
I’m salt and pepper in colour and have long eyebrows and a beard
Some other breeds might think that I look rather weird
This couple came to Liverpool to see if I could be
Friends with their boy George and keep him company
They let us play together and we really seem to bond
Until I ate George’s dinner and then he wasn’t very fond
We sat beside my new mum in the car, on our journey
Each one peering at each other over either knee
We arrived and went in my new home and started to make friends
We are both miniature schnauzer and we had to make amends
I admit I didn’t know many tricks, I could probably only sit
I watched the things that George did and there’s really nowt to it
I realised when he did something right he got a little treat
Hey if this is all you have to do, (you know I love to eat)
I was 4 years old in August, I love walking and having fun
There’s nothing I like better than going in the fields for a run
George is two months younger and calls himself top dog
But I can run much faster as he follows at a jog
We don’t much care for water, like rain and baths and puddles
But we both fight for attention to see who can get more cuddles
George is black and slightly shorter and can be bossy too
But he’s a softy really, he loves me, I love him too
We both lived with other families and were nervous at the time
What had we done to be sent away, we hadn’t caused a crime
We realise now that we were good, our parents tell us so
Each day will pass and they say, their love for us will grow

Love and hate
I hate being bullied by nasty dogs, and strays around the pond
I hate the rain and getting wet, and bathtime I'm not too fond
I hate the dogs that attack George and make me have to fight
I hate the owners that just don't care and think that it's alright
But really there is lots of stuff that outweigh the nasty things
Cos mum and dad love us loads and treat us both like kings
I love my basket and my bed, where I can go to sleep
I love my parents duvet best, where sometimes I will creep
I love to lick my dirty paws and make them really clean
I love to lick George's beard but he thinks I'm being mean
I love the seaside and the beach, I love to romp and play
I wish that we live nearer, so we could go every day
I love our George, I love my walks, I love my mum and dad
I love my food, I love our talks, I'm hardly ever bad
I love it when we cuddle up and I look into their eyes
I love the way they never try to hide it or disguise
I love the way our friendship fits like hand and glove
I love the way they cherish me and give me all their love

What does mum mean to us?
What does mum mean to us? We’ll try to express our thoughts
We get a tingle in our tummy and our head fills with all sorts
She takes us for our walkies and feeds us all our food
She knows when we tell porkies and tells us off for being rude
She talks and encourages us when we are feeling scared
For this we know that from day one that she really cared
She gives us treats but not too much cos she wants to keep us fit
She trained us so that we know tricks and stop at kerbs and sit
She plays with us and romps around and gets us both to play
She takes us for our boosters to keep diseases all at bay
She cuddles us and keeps us warm when we’ve been walking in the cold
She wraps us in her warm coat and cherishes us like gold
She corrects us when we’ve been doing wrong, when we misbehave
We know she only does it to protect us and keep us safe
She lets us cuddle up beside us on the sofa and in bed
As long as we’re on a blanket and don’t let it go to our head
We know that she is our top dog and we have to show respect
And if we had to vote for top mum, guess who we’d elect?
