Soggy Chips!

Do you, like us, consider that dogs are not just pets but really are a part of the family? So, does that mean, perhaps, that you spend a lot of time eating outside, in the cold, and the rain? Do you have to put up with soggy fish and chips; drink (rain) watered-down cups of tea; perhap you spend too much time standing with a brolly in one hand, a sarnie in the other, and wondering just where you can put that exciting bottle of 'sparkling' water!

We're pretty sure you'd all far rather be able to sit down, in a warm, dry, room and partake of a civilized meal with your dog at your feet (well our Sammie certainly would - she hates getting wet) - so here are the details of just a few really dog friendly cafes to help!

If you have a favourite eating place where your dogs are allowed INSIDE - please, please, please drop us a line and we'll make sure that an entry is included on our website.

DOG OWNERS - please support dog friendly eating places and help to keep them DOG FRIENDLY!

Well behaved dogs welcome. For summer we have a large garden which dogs enjoy, especially after a long walk along the beach or in the rolling South Downs. We also have a very cosy interior consisting of three separate rooms each with their own character. Cream teas, breakfasts & light lunches available.

Cafe Liaison  - Church Lane, Tavistock, Devon 01822 612225.

A friendly and welcoming café overlooking the beautiful Tavistock church green. As dog owners themselves, the proprietors are always ready to make a fuss of your best friend, bringing a bowl of water as a matter of course & providing top quality treats if allowed (ie, trimmings from the chicken, bacon & steak!).

The Cook Book - St Just-in-Penwith  Cafe-bookshop.  01736 787266

Visiting dogs welcomed with a piece of cheese. Open Tuesday - Sunday 10.00am - 5.00pm

Inglesport Cafe - The Square, Ingleton, North Yorkshire 015242 41146

The café offers a warm welcoming atmosphere to all - no matter how wet and muddy you are the staff always have a smile. Toys, games & colouring books available for the children and plenty of magazines & papers to browse through. We also have water bowls & chews for the dogs.

It is interesting to hear from, not just one, but several dog owners living in France, that when dining out in restaurants & bars they don't even have to ask if dogs are allowed - it's just taken for granted. And very often a dish of water is brought over for the dog(s) before they even take the food order for the human's! It seems to us that France has got it right.

At a time when restrictions for UK dog owners are becoming even tighter we'd be interested to hear your views about your experiences of eating out with your dogs in tow!

What is Flyball? - Valerie, Team Captain, & Secretary of Break-Aways Flyball Team tells us all about it.

Flyball (International Flyball Racing) is a team "knockout" relay race with 4 dogs and their handlers. A team is permitted to have 6 dogs and handlers (so they have reserve dogs.)

The object of the race is for each dog to jump over 4 hurdles, trigger the Flyball box to get the ball and return over the hurdles to the finish line. When the first dog returns, the next dog is released and so on until all four dogs have raced. The race is won by the first team to get 4 dogs and 4 balls back without faults. A dog that makes a fault has to rerun.

The sport was first started in the USA and the NAFA (North American Flyball Association) was formed in the 80s. Flyball came to Britain in the early 90's where a group of enthusiasts founded the British Flyball Association (BFA).

Flyball can be played by any breed of dog. Whether the dogs run fast or slow, the main objective is to have fun with your dog(s).

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

The idea of training hearing dogs to assist deaf people was first introduced to the UK in 1982 after Lady Beatrice Wright and vet Bruce Fogle saw a similar scheme in America. The first dog selected for training, ‘Favour’, a tan and white crossbred dog, was selected from a rescue centre and Hearing Dogs was launched at Crufts that year.

The Charity aims to improve the lives of deaf people through the training and placement of specially trained dogs. Around seventy per cent of dogs entering the scheme are selected from rescue centres or similar, offering safe and loving homes to otherwise unwanted dogs and giving extra appeal to the Charity. read more...

Pocket Puddle - At the moment everyone seems to be talking about the weather - is it going to be the hottest on record? One thing is for certain though, whatever the summer brings, at some point we are all going to be out and about and need to give our dogs a drink.

One thing that we've found very useful is the 'Pocket Puddle'. This is a simple portable, collapsible, drinking bowl and is ideal for a day out. It is easily stored in a pocket or handbag. Available from www.bordercollietrustgb.org.uk - just click on the 'Collie Shop 'link on their website. You'll not only be able to keep your dog well watered, but will also be helping to support the Border Collie Trust.
